West Palm Beach

What We Already Know

Palm Beach is an island. I’s chic; it’s quiet. It thumbs its old bluenose at Miami’s glitzy South Beach. It shrugs off L.A.’s Rodeo Drive with exclusive Worth Avenue, where art galleries are pricier and polo players spicier. The privileged winter residents shop at smart boutiques, never carry cash, and party on yachts the size of HMS Queen Mary. Dinner at home is akin to an evening with the Queen and Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace. You can pass it on the highway and never know it’s there.

Boca Raton Florida

The Little Palm Family Theatre on Florida’s Boca Raton Beach

Situated between West Palm Beach and Pompano Beach, Boca Raton is one of South Florida’s most beautiful towns. Among its past and present residents are Iron Maiden drummer, Nicko McBrain, and prolific tennis player Andy Roddick. Despite being home to just 20,000 people, its recent historical and political importance is certainly notable: it was the site of the first anthrax attack in the USA in 2001, and is also a famous liberal stronghold, with over 60% of its votes polled for John Kerry in 2004. However, hidden underneath all of this is the Little Palm Family Theatre, a wonderful and widely applauded community theatre which is completely run by volunteers.

On our way home from Orlando, a little more than an hour into our 20+ hour road trip back to Toronto, we stopped in St. Augustine, “the nation’s oldest city”, just north of Jacksonville - indeed the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the United States, having been founded by the Spanish in 1565.
