Citrus County Florida, home of the West Indian manatee, lies on the western coast of central Florida. Known all over the world as “The Nature Coast”, the county is the only place in the world where people are legally allowed to swim and play with the manatees that make their home off the Gulf coast thanks to the spring-fed rivers that empty there. Rivers, forests and beautiful coastline combine with the cultural appeal of the many cities and towns that dot the area to make Citrus County arguably the most beautiful place to visit and live in the entire state.

The arrival of tropical storms, like this year’s Tropical Storm Barry, coincides closely with the typical date for onset of Florida’s so called ‘rainy season’ that generally runs from late May to October. Although Florida fishermen experienced a record ‘dry season’ this year, the occurrence of drought during the cooler winter and spring months was hardly unusual. Bass fishing in Lake Okeechobee suffered as water levels reached all-time lows, exposing large areas of lake bottom and leaving many boat ramps high and dry.

South Florida - The latest trend in vacation homes or second homes is the resort condo hotel. According to NAR, investment homes accounted for a quarter of all home purchases in 2004, and vacation home purchases an additional 13 percent. Condo Hotels first started appearing in places like Miami Beach and Ft. Lauderdale. They have increased tremendously in popularity and can now be found in places like Belize and Dubai.

What We Already Know
Palm Beach is an island. I’s chic; it’s quiet. It thumbs its old bluenose at Miami’s glitzy South Beach. It shrugs off L.A.’s Rodeo Drive with exclusive Worth Avenue, where art galleries are pricier and polo players spicier. The privileged winter residents shop at smart boutiques, never carry cash, and party on yachts the size of HMS Queen Mary. Dinner at home is akin to an evening with the Queen and Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace. You can pass it on the highway and never know it’s there.

When you think of Florida you may imagine all if its coastline and its array of beaches to be pretty much the same. Think again. When choosing a stretch of sand as the focus of your visit, you’ll have options galore. You probably won’t go wrong with any of them, but if you’re leaning towards the Gulf Coast rather than the Atlantic, which can be a little rough sometimes, choose a location in the heart of the action; choose Clearwater.
